One of the main roads to the M5 at Aztec West is set to close overnight for three weeks from this weekend.
Bradley Stoke Way will be closed in both directions for resurfacing works between Great Stoke Roundabout and Baileys Court Roundabout from tomorrow night (Saturday, May 17).
The closure will come into force every night from 8pm until 6am the following morning until Sunday, June 8.
South Gloucestershire Council said the closure would involve “re-surfacing the existing carriageway, cycleways and the new footways”.
There will be a diversion route in place via B4057, A38 and Bradley Stoke Way and vice versa.
On South Gloucestershire Council StreeCare Facebook page a post on the closure added: “Access will still be available to residents of The Worthys, but there may be some delays at times.”
While the council apologised for any inconvenience caused, many residents were left disappointed. One Facebook user commented under the post: “Shambles, all for a cycle lane which no one will use!
“There are multiple roads in Bradley Stoke that need improvement and this isn’t one, just drive up past Baileys court school no road markings making school pick up dangerous and the road is falling to pieces.”
Someone else penned: “#SouthGloucestershireCouncil have you seen how long traffic jams you are causing on a Tuesday and Wednesday morning?”
Another person wrote: “With all this unnecessary roadworks greeting these white elephants, someone in the council must be making an absolute fortune.
“Almost every main road is subject to long roadworks, all which will add no real benefit.” A separate individual chimed in: “Don’t know but the ring road in the road works this morning was chaos.”
The two-year roadwork project
Bradley Stoke Way had already been shut overnight from last month to allow works to take place safely near the centre of the remaining carriageway. The roadwork project, which will see more closures towards Aztec West, began in February.
It aims to make it easier and safer for people walking, cycling, and using wheelchairs – and make taking the bus more convenient. A new bus lane will also be created southbound approaching the Savages Wood roundabout alongside new bus stop facilities for the T1 and 73 route, Bristol Live previously reported.
In addition to the Baileys Court roundabout, the Patchway Brook, Savages Wood, and Webbs Wood roundabouts will see the reduction or removal of traffic islands along their arms. The roundabouts will also see a series of upgraded or new crossings added.
The speed limit between Great Stoke Way and the Great Meadow roundabout will be raised to 40 miles per hour up from 30, the council said, and the existing shared-use cycle path will be upgraded to a two-way path with a segregated footway for pedestrians.
The council has said the completion of the work is expected in “early 2027”, but that it hopes it will be finished by December next year. Diversions will be in place during the works, and the T1 and M1 bus services will be re-routed when needed.
The roadworks form part of a £31.8 million project to improve cycling and pedestrian routes from the edge of Bristol towards Thornbury and Alveston, funded by the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlements Fund.
The council said the work was needed due to population growth and the alternatives to using a car were “not good enough” in Thornbury, Bradley Stoke, and other areas near Bristol.
