Canada will buy up to a dozen submarines from German firm ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems in a historic deal, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Monday.
TKMS beat out South Korean company Hanwha Ocean for the lucrative contract.
The announcement comes before NATO leaders will gather for a summit in the Turkish capital of Ankara.
It also comes as US President Donald Trump pressures NATO allies to bolster their defense spending.
