BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A convicted felon from Birmingham has been sentenced by a federal judge on multiple firearms charges, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.
U.S. District Judge Anna Manasco has sentenced 32-year-old Robert Garrett to 130 months in prison.
The sentence comes after Garrett pleaded guilty in March to two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime.
According to court records, in April 2023, officers with the Birmingham Police Department pulled the vehicle Garrett was driving over for a traffic stop.
When officers ran Garrett’s information through dispatch, it was found he had several active warrants for his arrest.
That’s when officers removed Garrett from the vehicle and arrested him for those warrants.
While doing so, officers said they smelled marijuana in the vehicle. During their search of the vehicle, they found a pistol, a 25-round magazine, and a backpack containing marijuana.
In August 2023, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents went to a residence in Birmingham to follow up on a federal firearms violation involving Garrett. When Garrett met agents at the door, they smelled marijuana in the house.
Agents said they obtained a search warrant and found marijuana, digital scales, ammunition, a pistol, and more than $5,000 in the home.
