Oasis singer Liam Gallagher poked fun at England’s captain Harry Kane after the Three Lions rose triumphant in their World Cup match against Mexico on Monday (July 6).
The men’s national football team beat Mexico 3-2 in a thrilling game that kept many fans in the country up in the early hours of of the morning, with kick-off rescheduled by an hour to 2am.
Following the victory, England fans erupted into a rendition of Wonderwall at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City – with the men’s team joining in for the singalong. Fans also joined in singing the track at fanzones, including in Manchester.

But it didn’t take long for Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher to tease the captain on social media.
Kane later appeared to have lost his voice as he struggled to speak in an interview with BBC Sport, prompting Gallagher to post on X: “It’s hard work that singing Harry Kane cmon ENGLAND cmon WONDERWALL.”

Over the course of the 2026 World Cup the rock band’s hit 1995 track has become an unofficial anthem with the men’s team lining up to sing it back to fans. Sir David Beckham, Chicken Shop Date star Amelia Dimoldenberg and TV personality Jamie Laing also joined in on the celebrations and showed their support for the men’s national team online.
Sir David posted a string of Instagram stories and said: “Now that’s a performance wow. There was no other way of winning this game other than that. Absolutely brilliant.”
He also praised the “brilliant” England manager, Thomas Tuchel, and goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, who said his performance was “absolutely nothing other than perfection”.
“Huge team performance. A night to be proud of each and everyone of the squad,” he said. Dimoldenberg said she “can’t cope” in a video shared online with the caption “we did it!”
EastEnders actor Ross Kemp also posted a video on his Instagram account and said: “That is without a doubt the best England performance I think I’ve ever seen. That is without a doubt true English spirit.”
Chart-topping singers Rita Ora and Lewis Capaldi were also among the celebrities joining in the festivities and watched the nail-biting match at a London pub together.
