13-year-old arrested after Birmingham PD said he lit firework, threw it toward officers

  • 7 July 2026

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The Birmingham Police Department has arrested a 13-year-old boy after they said he lit a firework on the Fourth of July and threw it in the direction of officers.

Police officers were in the area of 67th Street South and Joppa Avenue Saturday evening when the incident happened.

After police investigated, they said the suspect was identified. On Monday, July 6, the 13-year-old boy was found and taken into custody on charges of reckless endangerment.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The boy has not been identified by police since he is a juvenile.

Authorities with Birmingham PD added that fireworks are illegal in the city limits of Birmingham and the reckless use of them can pose a significant risk of injury and can cause fires or property damage, especially in densely populated areas like apartment communities.

Birmingham PD said they want to remind the public that reckless behavior involving fireworks will not be tolerated and anyone who endangered the safety of others would be held accountable.
