Birmingham City and Jay Stansfield are featured on the new season of Welcome to WrexhamWrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney holds up a Birmingham City shirt gifted to him by Tom Brady
Birmingham City feature heavily on the new season of Welcome to Wrexham – and Rob McElhenney is a big fan.
Footage of Wrexham’s 3-1 defeat to Blues at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park in September was captured and McElhenney was very complimentary of the work of Tom Wagner and Tom Brady.
Record signing Jay Stansfield made his League One debut for Blues that night and marked it with two goals to turn the game around after Jack Marriott’s early opener. Tomoki Iwata notched Blues’ third goal with a precise left-footed strike from range.
Reacting to Stansfield’s double, McElhenney said: “Tom Wagner and Tom Brady are investing in top-end talent, Jay Stansfield is a great example of that. They are paying £15million just for the transfer.
“Well, I guess the Toms didn’t **** it up. Stansfield was worth it. Twice.
“They played like a class above. They put on a clinic and beat our ***. Just because we lost to them, it doesn’t mean we’re going to lay down.
“I look at Birmingham as a great example of a tough town and a tough club who have been down before and risen up. They’ve put the investment and the work in, now they’re going to go out and try to dominate the league. I find that inspiring.”
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson was also fulsome in his praise of Chris Davies’ team. The Red Dragons eventually finished runners-up to Blues in League One and the clubs will meet again in next season’s Championship.
Parkinson commented: “We didn’t respond as well as I would have liked, but we’ve got to respect that we are up against a team that is probably top-eight Championship.
“We were disappointed, as you always are, and it jolted us because we’re a team that’s not used to getting beat. It knocked us a bit.”
