Leeds United have confirmed that teenager Harry Gray will spend the 26/27 season out on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

We’re yet to see confirmation of any incomings at Elland Road this summer, but there’s been a couple of outgoings sealed.

Pascal Struijk headed to Brighton recently, while teenager Harry Gray is also on the move on a season-long loan.

Leeds’ teenage sensation spent the second half of last season on loan at the bottom end of League One. He moved to South Yorkshire with relegation strugglers Rotherham United.

In the process, Gray’s three goals and flashes of superb talent weren’t enough to keep the Millers from relegation.

Now, Gray is heading back to the third tier in the same part of the world, this time hopefully at the upper end of the division. A season-long loan to Sheffield Wednesday has now been confirmed for him.

Owls sporting director Simon Wilson was delighted with the announcement, and expects big things from the 17-year-old.

“Harry has an elite record in youth football and proved last season that he can translate his qualities to a senior environment,” Wilson told SWFC. “In challenging circumstances, he delivered a good attacking impact in this league and his experiences with Rotherham United will provide solid foundations for him to build from. 

“Our playing identity will demand that we create a lot of opportunities, and we expect Harry to be a big threat to our opponents. We are thankful to Leeds United for trusting us with the next phase of his development and look forward to bringing him into the group.”

There is understandably a clamour to see Gray brought into Daniel Farke’s first team as soon as possible.

He’s an incredibly talented player, but there is a long way to go before he can have a meaningful impact at Premier League level.

What helps him this season is a full campaign of playing regularly for a side vying for League One promotion. Importantly, he’s competing in a high-pressure environment at a big Yorkshire club, which bodes well.

“There were quite a few clubs interested but it was an easy decision because this is such a big club. It’s crazy to think about 24,000 season tickets in League One and the timing is perfect, as I have a full pre-season to settle in,” Gray told his new employers.

“Hillsborough is a special stadium when the fans get going and I think this year, with everything that’s going on around the place, it should be unbelievable and hopefully a season to remember. It’s the perfect place for me.”

If platformed correctly, there’s no reason why Gray can’t hit 15-20 goals in League One next season. The way he’s spoke about the move, plus Wilson’s testimony, suggests that Gray will thrive at Hillsborough next season.

A strong campaign in that environment is one step closer for Gray becoming a star at Elland Road.
