A knife was found in a pupil’s bag at a primary school in Bristol yesterday (Thursday, May 15).

The knife was found at The Park Primary School, on Hollow Road in Kingswood.

An email sent to parents and carers said it was discovered during “the course of the day”.

Head of School, Paul Rowsell, said no child or adult was harmed at any time.

The knife, which was in a bag belonging to a pupil in Year 5, was immediately confiscated by staff.

Parents and carers of Year 5 students were notified straight away.

An email, sent just after 8am this morning, alerted the rest of the school community.

The email from Mr Rowsell said: “I am writing to inform you of an incident that took place yesterday.

“During the course of the day, a knife was discovered in the bag of a Year 5 pupil.

“This item was immediately confiscated by staff, and no child or adult was harmed at any time.

“The safety and wellbeing of all our pupils is always our highest priority and we acted promptly to ensure everyone remained safe.

“I am currently conducting a thorough investigation in line with our safeguarding policies and procedures.

“The Year 5 parents were notified yesterday but I wanted to be transparent with you as a school community and let you know that we are taking this very seriously.”

The Park Primary School told BristolLive: “On reports that a child was in possession of a knife in their bag, staff immediately confiscated the item safely. No one was harmed.”

South Gloucestershire Council, Avon and Somerset Police and South Gloucestershire Safeguarding Team were made aware of the incident and are working with Mr Rowsell who added: “We are taking this incident very seriously and are working with the relevant agencies to manage this sensitively and to safeguard all the children and staff in the school.”

Avon and Somerset Police were also asked for comment on the incident.
