It looks like Google is experimenting with a more streamlined way to handle quick replies in the Gmail app on Android. As spotted by the folks over at 9to5Google, a new, persistent reply bar is starting to show up at the bottom of emails for some users, and it could make firing off quick responses a whole lot faster.
This new interface ditches the current quick reply suggestions or the standard “Reply” button that opens up a separate compose area. Instead, what’s appearing for some is a sleek, pill-shaped text field anchored right at the bottom of the email you’re reading. To the left of the text field, there are handy shortcuts for formatting and attachments, with the send button situated on the right.
The idea here seems pretty clear: tap the text field, your keyboard pops up, and you can immediately start typing your reply without navigating away or into a different screen. For those quick “got it,” “thanks,” or “on my way” type messages, this looks like a far more efficient and less disruptive way to handle things. It keeps you in the context of the original email and just lets you get your reply out.
According to the report, this new bottom reply bar has primarily been seen on larger Android screens, like the Pixel Fold when unfolded and other Android tablets. This makes a lot of sense, as that bottom-anchored bar would be particularly well-suited for two-handed use on a wider display, or even for easier one-handed pecking on a tablet.

As with many new Google features, this doesn’t seem to be a wide rollout just yet. 9to5Google mentions seeing it on Gmail version 2024.04.07.x, suggesting it’s likely an A/B test or a very limited initial deployment while Google gathers feedback.
We’re definitely fans of UI changes that genuinely speed up workflows and reduce friction, and this new Gmail reply bar looks like it has the potential to do just that. It’s a more modern approach to quick replies, and if it works as smoothly as it looks, we’re hoping to see this make its way to more Gmail users on Android – and perhaps even other screen sizes – in the near future.
