Cassette brings Parisian bistro cooking to a 1630s building on Maiden Lane this autumn
French restaurants have been arriving in London at a steady clip since the pandemic, and yet somehow there’s always room for one more. The latest is Cassette, opening on Maiden Lane in Covent Garden this autumn from Mark Gurney and Matt Bushnall, the pair behind Peckham’s Levan and Bar Levan. Where Levan draws on food across Europe, Cassette is French specifically, run out of a Grade II listed building dating from the 1630s.
Heading the kitchen is Essa Fakhry, who founded and ran the kitchen at Note in Dublin and previously cooked at Planque in London. The menu leans towards French bistro cooking with a Parisian edge, expect things like coq-au-vin jaune pie, monkfish au poivre and a terrine of fromage de tête with tarragon, though the full menu is still to be confirmed ahead of opening. Madeleine Fawcett, previously of Forza Wine, runs front of house. The wine list carries over Bar Levan’s focus on low-intervention bottles from growers the team already has relationships with.
The name nods to Gurney’s other life as a DJ and record label owner (Levan itself is named after the New York DJ Larry Levan). Cassette opens in Covent Garden this autumn, with more details to follow.
