BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A former Birmingham police officer has been charged with first-degree sexual assault.
The Birmingham Police Department says Darrion Lapsley, 26, of Birmingham was arrested on July 16 by the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team.

The department says the alleged incident happened July 12 in the 800 block of 3rd Avenue West while he was an employee of the Birmingham Police Department.
Lapsley will be taken to the Jefferson County Jail. He began his employment with the department in 2025 and is now a former employee.
Chief Michael Pickett released the following statement:
“The Birmingham Police Department has arrested a former Birmingham Police officer following a criminal investigation. This serves as a clear reminder that no one is above the law.

That trust requires us to hold ourselves to a higher standard, and when that standard is violated, we have a duty to act. The Birmingham Police Department said it is committed to thoroughly investigating allegations of misconduct and holding individuals accountable regardless of their position or profession.

All members of the Birmingham Police Department is held to the highest standards of conduct, and any employee who violates the law or betrays the public’s trust will be held accountable,” the department added.
