Sony will shut down the PS3’s digital storefront in July 2027, after over 20 years of support.

While existing purchases will remain downloadable for the “foreseeable future”, that means some titles will no longer be available to purchase anywhere – or will become prohibitively expensive in physical format.

But emulator RPCS3 continues to achieve impressive things, confirming compatibility with 75% of the console’s library on PC.

These are titles that are considered fully playable, with no game breaking glitches.

A further 22% function with issues, while a little under 2% won’t boot past the main menu.

“RPCS3 continues to be improved with new features, fixes, and optimisations, bringing it ever closer to preserving the entire PS3 library,” the emulator’s developers say.

From the perspective of game preservation, this is important work – especially as manufacturer Sony seems to have little to no interest in providing backwards compatibility with the PS3 itself.
