A former Birmingham police officer has been arrested after an investigation that occurred while he was employed by the department.Police said an incident that happened Sunday, July 16, on Third Avenue West, involving Darrion Lapsley, 26, of Birmingham, led to him being taken into custody early Thursday.He has been charged with first-degree sexual assault.Lapsley began his employment with the department in 2025 and is now a former employee, the department said.Following his arrest, Lapsley was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on $15,000 bond.After he was taken into custody, Birmingham police released a statement saying in part:”The Birmingham Police Department is committed to thoroughly investigating allegations of misconduct and holding individuals accountable regardless of their position or profession.”Law enforcement officers are entrusted with serving the public with integrity, professionalism and accountability. Police said an incident that happened Sunday, July 16, on Third Avenue West, involving Darrion Lapsley, 26, of Birmingham, led to him being taken into custody early Thursday.
He has been charged with first-degree sexual assault.
