Firefighters have raced to an Edinburgh Airport car park after a car was found engulfed in flames.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said they received a call out at 1.40pm on Saturday May 17.

Images circulating online show smoke rising into the Edinburgh sky with plumes visible from a considerable distance.

One eye witness believed the fire was situated in a long stay car park at the capital airport, reports Edinburgh Live.

An update from Edinburgh Airport stated the vehicle fire had been extinguished by their on-site fire service and investigation is underway to establish the nature of the fire.

A spokesman for the airport said: “Our fire service responded to and extinguished a vehicle fire within one of our car parks.

“An investigation is now taking place to determine the cause.”

A spokesperson for the SFRS said: “We received reports of a vehicle fire at a car park at Edinburgh Airport at around 1.40pm on Saturday May 17.

“One appliance was sent and remains on site.”
