A royal expert has claimed that the relationship between Meghan Markle and Omid Scobie has gone “ice cold”, citing an ongoing “pattern” as the reason.
Scobie, 45, the former royal editor-at-large for Harper’s Bazaar and author behind royal deep-dives Finding Freedom and Endgame, has long been rumoured to be an ally of the Duchess of Sussex, 44, particularly when he publicly defended her multiple times following Megxit in 2020.
Now, Rob Shuter has taken to his Naughty But Nice Substack to reveal that the pair are no longer as close as they were, with sources telling the expert that there is “no way” the author walked away from their alliance.
“Meghan was his biggest story, his meal ticket. If someone ended this relationship, it wasn’t him,” an insider told Shuter.
According to the journalist, this isn’t the first time Meghan has iced out a former supporter, with the behaviour forming part of what she sees as an ongoing “pattern” of the Duchess moving on from what no longer serves her.
“People are incredibly valuable until they aren’t. Once she feels she’s gotten what she needs, she cuts ties and rarely looks back,” the insider said.
“Omid built a career covering Meghan,” another source told Shuter, adding: “Walking away from your biggest story doesn’t make sense. Being pushed aside does.”
Last year, an insider claimed a resurfaced interview showed that Scobie’s Endgame had derailed the Sussexes’ plans to enter a “new era” after leaving the Firm.
The exposé about the Royal Family was released in November 2023 and detailed the evolution of the monarchy since Harry and Meghan quit royal life in 2020.
In the book, Scobie supported the couple while slamming popular royals such as Kate Middleton.
The author also revisited Harry and Meghan’s controversial 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview, in which they claimed a member of the family asked the Duchess about her eldest child, Archie’s, skin colour.
According to Daily Mail Royal Editor Rebecca English, Endgame brought back up issues about the Royal Family that Harry and Meghan would have preferred to have been resolved.
“It’s raised uncomfortable situations that the family were really hopeful of trying to bury, and I include Harry and Meghan in that,” she told Mail+’s Palace Confidential in a 2024 interview.
“I remember after the whole furore around Spare, and before that the Netflix documentary and all of the interviews, one member of their team briefing very grandly that this was the end of their ‘look-back projects’.
“Part of me thought, who gives you the right to say this is our programme of look-back projects?”
English said it came as the couple were “entering this new era” forging individual careers away from the Firm.
“And they haven’t done any Royal Family-related project, so I get the impression they were really hoping to start to move forward, slightly naively, I think,” she said.
Years later, Harry, Meghan and their two children, Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, have reunited with King Charles, 77, at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire, marking the first time the family have spent time together in four years.
Buckingham Palace described the meeting, which took place earlier this month, as a “private family occasion” and it is reported that there will be no publicly released images.
