‘It’s like a warzone,’ London community reacts to tornado damage

  • 18 May 2025

LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) – Neighborhoods throughout London are feeling the affects of the tornado early Saturday morning.

Getson Roberts live in the an apartment complex off of Highway 25, near the London Corbin Airport. He said he was in his apartment when the tornado tore through.

“Something caught my eye and I said ‘We’re not gonna make it to the basement, everybody get in between a door frame and get down,’” Roberts said. “As soon as we had the kids and we went down. It happened that quick.”

Neighbors and family members told WYMT that two people from the apartment complex died.

Joshua Hammons was working at the London-Corbin Airport overnight before the tornado came through. He said his friend saw him on security camera footage and told him to get out just in time before the tornado came through the area.

“Houses are just gone,” Hammons said. “Half of the airport, just gone.”

Hammons said he spent all of his Saturday cutting through downed trees with chainsaws, looking to see if there are any victims or survivors in the rubble.

“There ain’t no words for it,” Hammons said. “It’s like a warzone.”

Volunteers were all over London on Saturday, with folks giving out food and water and cleaning up debris.

Roberts said he is grateful to have made it through the disaster. He said he may have lost everything, but not his life. “By the grace of God, we survived it,” Roberts said.
