A man’s body was recovered from the River Irwell last night, it has been confirmed.

There was a large emergency service around the stretch of the river near Spinningfields on Wednesday (July 22) following reports of a man entering the water. Firefighters attended along with police and paramedics.

A rescue boat was seen by witnesses having been launched onto the water, which marks the border between Manchester and Salford.

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesperson confirmed they were called around 10.25pm. Sadly, they said a man’s body was recovered from the water. His age has not yet been confirmed.

The death is being treated as non-suspicious, the spokesperson added.

A file is expected to be passed to the coroner.
