Sheffield Wednesday are not expected to sign any new players in time to join them in Hungary as the deal for Tommi O’Reilly nears.
Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on the signing of Tommi O’Reilly, who is poised to join on loan from Aston Villa. However, The Star states work on a deal is ongoing, and it is unlikely that he signs for SWFC in time to join them in Europe for their pre-season training trip.
In fact, the Owls are not expected to make any additions in time to feature in Saturday’s friendly with Stoke City. The tie takes place in Vienna, with the squad travelling over to Austria from Budapest on Friday.
O’Reilly has other admirers but Sheffield Wednesday are the leading contenders to strike a deal. He is currently under contract at Aston Villa for another two years.
How Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa relationship continues with Tommi O’Reilly deal
Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa have struck up a fruitful relationship in this summer transfer window. SWFC hope to benefit greatly from the deals done with the Premier League side, and the O’Reilly swoop indicates the healthy bond between the two.
Should O’Reilly sign as expected, he will become the third player to join the Owls from Villa. Louie Barry and Sil Swinkels have both moved to Hillsborough on permanent deals, serving as exciting long-term signings for the League One side.
It remains to be seen just what sort of impact they have, but both represent smart signings. Barry has starred at the level before with Stockport County and is touted for a bright future, while Swinkels is another high ceiling player having impressed on loan at Chesterfield.
If the permanent duo and O’Reilly can impress, the link between SWFC and Villa could continue in the long run. Henrik Pedersen is a highly regarded coach with a good track record of developing young players, so top clubs are likely to trust him with bright prospects.
The Verdict: Sheffield Wednesday have done enough business to avoid mad rush
Of course, there is a desire for the signings to keep coming at Sheffield Wednesday. However, the early business done means there is no desperate scramble to get new players onboard as soon as possible.
As such, there will be no concern over the fact O’Reilly is unlikely to link up with the squad before the end of the week. It will be hoped a deal can be ratified so he can join his new teammates upon their return from Europe.
Sheffield Wednesday’s summer signings so far
- Joe Lumley – Goalkeeper
- Ricardo Santos – Centre-back
- Sil Swinkels – Centre-back
- Billy Mitchell – Central midfielder
- Callum Slattery – Central midfielder
- Barry Bannan – Central midfielder
- Jordi Liongola – Winger
- Louie Barry – Forward
- Harry Gray – Striker
More business awaits, but the Owls have enjoyed a strong window to date. Although there is an awareness that it will take time to rebuild, the pedigree of players brought in could see Wednesday compete for an immediate return to the Championship.
It puts the pressure on SWFC chief Pedersen to deliver, as he will soon have the squad at his disposal to win games far more regularly than his side did in a nightmare 2025/26 season.
