Men and women in Grimsby are being invited to strengthen their pelvic floors thanks to one salon’s new pelvic chair. Momenique’s Beauty Spa on Richmond Road has recently started offering Better Pelvi treatments – and owner Donna Clarke says one 28-minute treatment is equivalent to 12,500 kegel floor exercises.
Donna, who has owned the salon since 2003, said: “Better Pelvi is good for incontinence, erectile dysfunction, prolapses and prostate issues. We are the only business in the area with the chair. It’s good for ladies who’ve just had babies, men with prostate problems, runners, weight lifters. Anyone with lower pelvic problems or incontinence or bowel problems.”
Momenique’s already offered holistic treatments such as sugaring – a form of hair removal – massages and skincare. But it was having a hysterectomy last year which prompted Donna to look into Better Pelvi. “I’m not quite 50 yet and now my bladder is weak. I’m too young to have an operation and I wanted to do something about it. I looked at the chair, which they’ve had in private hospitals for a while, but now they are coming into the beauty industry. The next closest Better Pelvi chairs are in Manchester and Leeds.”
The salon has only had the chair for a couple of weeks but is being “inundated with phone calls”. Customers can visit for a 15-minute trial and will need to fill in a questionnaire before getting a tailored treatment plan.

Donna said: “It doesn’t matter how many sit ups you do, you’re not toning your pelvic area. You’ve got three layers of muscles and when we are doing pelvic floor exercises we are working the lower muscles. But this goes further up, it uses electromagnetic stimulation to pulse. It’s good for the lower lumbar area as well. It’s an area of the body that can’t be worked on at the gym. You need electrical stimulation.
“Some younger men suffer from erectile dysfunction and it’s really good for that. Women are more likely to talk about issues, where men don’t. It’s a good way to help men or women. In my salon I will only invest in something if I know it will work. The majority of my treatments are tried and tested by me.”
Customers sit on the chair fully clothed and the pulsating motion is the only thing they will feel during the treatment. Donna says the treatment is “not uncomfortable” and is simply “a workout for the lower pelvic area”. “You can go about your business straight afterwards and just sit and relax while it’s working,” she said.

The spa garden opened post-covid after Donna realised people around her had high anxiety levels(Image: Donna Clarke)
Over 20 years ago, Donna moved to the area from Penrith to work in a Grimsby salon, saying before that she “didn’t know Grimsby existed”. But now she has been an established Grimsby business owner since 2003, and says “I never thought I’d be able to open my dream and here I am all these years later.
“I’ve had a lot of girls work for me who’ve gone and done their own businesses. I’m more about helping other salons out. Our industry can come across as really awful, and it comes down to the salon owners. Clients enter as strangers but they leave as friends.”
Momenique’s Beauty Spa stays away from aesthetic treatments, preferring all natural therapies. It has a spa garden which Donna opened post-covid after seeing a lot of people around her struggle with anxiety. There is a hot tub, sauna and relaxation area which costs £30 for 90 minutes’ use. “There are a lot of ladies and gents that haven’t got a lot of money and they can’t afford to go to bigger spas. After covid there was a lot of anxiety and mental health issues. People who’ve had surgery and might be self-conscious about their bodies can come to us, it’s all secluded, it’s private and people can relax.”
