Who’s making “Tracks”?
Bruce Springsteen and Max Weinberg. Springsteen’s upcoming “Tracks II: The Lost Albums” includes seven unreleased albums (83 songs) recorded between 1983 and 2018. It will be released on Friday, June 27, on Sony Music.
Weinberg, known as Mighty Max to E Street band fans, gave the Boss a hand on the project
“Five, six seven years ago I spent the whole summer playing on about 50 songs of this where I was really pleased that I replaced a bunch of really well-known drummers who didn’t quite have the feel, and drum machines,” said Weinberg from the stage of the Vixen venue in Illinois during a Max Weinberg Jukebox show on April 4.
Fan Emily Ventrello shared the clip. “Some of the stuff that I recorded with Bruce is on these records, and they’re really cool,” Weinberg added.
To break down that period, seven years ago the Boss was in New York for his historic “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre; six years ago the “Western Stars” album and movie was released; and five years ago was the period of COVID-19 lockdown, which did see the release of Springsteen and the E Street Band’s “Letter to You” in October 2020.
Springsteen said he went into his “vault” during the pandemic on the “The Lost Album” video trailer, released on April 4.
“This guy digs deep, deep, deep,” Weinberg said. “It’s coming out in June — not that he needs me to plug his new record, but there’s really some really cool stuff. There’s the long-awaited sort of Burt Bacharach-Hal David album that he did, and he took some songs from that.”
That would be “Twilight Hours” from “The Lost Albums.”
“There’s a great couple of rockabilly songs, and he hired a group of Mexican, not mariachis exactly, but classical Mexican musicians to do a record, which is incredible,” said Weinberg, referring to the lost album “Inyo.”
“Inyo” is a Native American word that means “dwelling place of the great spirit,” according to the Inyo County website. The county is located in the eastern central part of California.
Springsteen spoke of the “Streets of Philadlephia Sessions” lost album, which incorporates “drum loop and synthesizer sounds” into the music, according to the “Tracks 2” press release.
“This would’ve been my fourth record in a row about relationships,” wrote Springsteen in his memoir “Born to Run,” referring to “Tunnel of Love,” Lucky Town” and “Human Touch.”
“If I could’ve felt its fullness, I wouldn’t have hesitated to put it out. But a not-fully-realized record around the same topic felt like one too many.”
Team Springsteen released a lyric video for the riveting “Rain on the River,” from the lost “Perfect World” album, described as encapsulating “that project’s arena-ready E Street flavor.”
“I’ve heard all this stuff so I’m here to tell you, check it out,” Weinberg said.
Prices for the new albums range from $14.98 for the companion CD to $349.98 for the box set in vinyl format.
