Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, may lose another one of his honors.
The BBC reported on Monday, July 27, that a bill is currently being drafted that, if approved, would strip the former Duke of York of his Freedom of the City of London honor.
The City of London Corporation previously said via a spokesperson in March that the honor could not be revoked. However, according to the BBC, the Corporation is developing a process for removal.
According to the City of London, “From the Middle Ages to the Victorian era, the Freedom represented the right to trade, enabling members of a Guild or Livery Company to carry out their business in the Square Mile.”
While most of the practical reasons for obtaining the honor are gone, “it remains a unique part of London’s history, to which many people who live or work in the City are proud to be admitted,” the City states on its website.
The father of two — who was arrested and released on his 66th birthday amid renewed scrutiny in his ties to late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein — received the Freedom of the City of London in 2012 “by virtue of patrimony” because his father, Prince Philip, was a Freeman, per the BBC.
As for Andrew being stripped of the title, a Corporation spokesperson said, “We understand why people want this matter resolved as quickly as possible, and we share that desire.”
The draft bill is reportedly set to go before the Policy and Resources Committee in September and then the Court in October.
“The fastest and most appropriate approach is to put in place a lawful process that allows the City Corporation to make these decisions itself, rather than seeking legislation through Parliament,” a Corporation spokesperson said, per the BBC.
“We are progressing that work and, if elected members approve the new process, they will then be able to consider whether Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s Freedom should be removed,” the spokesperson added.
Though the disgraced royal has consistently denied wrongdoing and maintained his innocence regarding his connection to the late financier, he was accused of sharing confidential information with Epstein related to his role as a trade envoy.
The Thames Valley Police launched an inquiry into Andrew after it was reported that emails suggest the disgraced royal sent Epstein reports from a tour of Southeast Asia he took in 2010.
Following Andrew’s arrest, his brother King Charles III said via a statement issued from Buckingham Palace that authorities have the royal family’s “full and wholehearted support and co-operation” throughout an investigation.
