Leeds United have pursued multiple high-profile free agents this summer.

Harry Wilson is an example of a free agent the Whites have landed. The Welsh winger recently played his first minutes in a Leeds shirt in our pre-season clash against Wrexham.

Julian Brandt is another example of a free agent we are in the midst of pursuing. An offer has been tabled for the German playmaker as United eagerly await his decision.

But another free agent who Leeds were recently linked with looks to be on the move elsewhere.

John Stones on the verge of joining Inter Milan

Following the World Cup, Leeds found themselves linked with John Stones, with the centre-back available following the expiration of his contract at Manchester City.

The England international won everything there is to win during his decade-long stint in Manchester, and the 32-year-old would’ve added more incredible experience to Daniel Farke’s squad.

However, rather than returning to Yorkshire, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Stones has agreed to sign for the reigning champions of Italy, Inter Milan, on a two-year deal.

The defender is said to be undergoing his medical soon, killing any hope we have of signing Stones.

Romano’s report also states that Stones’ salary will be around £3.4million net per season.

This works out at around £65,385 per week. This makes it even more agonising that United missed out on this sensational deal.

John Stones to Leeds always felt like a long shot

In all honesty, I never expected us to sign Stones this summer, as much as I’d have liked us to.

The second clubs near the top of the Premier League and Serie A started sniffing around him, I was doubtful about our chances of getting him to join.

In all honesty, another right-footed centre back is not needed that much with the current makeup of our squad. But signing Stones certainly would’ve been a much appreciated bonus.

If we miss out on Brandt too, however, this will be a real kick in the teeth.

Unlike with Stones, it seems as if we’ve positioned ourselves near the front of the queue for Brandt’s signature. After all this time waiting for him, missing out on him now would be infuriating.

Hopefully this doesn’t turn out to be the case, and Stones is the only free agent we end up missing out on.
