British tourists heading to Spain or Portugal are being urged to prepare for a sizzling heatwave, with temperatures expected to soar to 37°C and potentially impact holiday plans.

Starting May 27, a wave of intense heat will sweep across both countries, pushing the mercury well into the mid-30s for at least three days.

The hottest spots are forecast to be central Portugal and southwestern Spain, with Seville — famously known as Spain’s “frying pan” — and the coastal city of Faro among the hardest hit. Travellers are advised to stay cool, stay hydrated, and keep an eye on local weather alerts.

Meanwhile, back in the UK, the BBC Weather team predicts that areas waking up to cloud cover on Saturday morning should expect this to clear, leaving behind warm sunshine. UV levels are anticipated to be high across the entire country.

Sunday is expected to be dry and sunny for most places. However, North Sea coasts may experience cloudiness and cooler temperatures due to a north-easterly wind, reports Birmingham Live.

The forecast for today (Saturday May 17) explains: “This morning, England, eastern Wales and north-east Scotland will see a cloudy start. In the afternoon, the cloud will widely clear allowing for sunshine. North Sea English coasts will stay cloudier.

“Cloud from North Sea coasts will build into eastern and central England overnight. Elsewhere in the UK, skies will remain widely clear with patchy fog over some hills in the north.” Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter here

The forecast reads: “A cloudy start in eastern England tomorrow. Turning sunny once again in the afternoon for most. Scattered showers, possibly heavy and thundery, develop later for southwest Scotland and Cumbria.

“Monday sees a chance of showers which will sink southwards across Northern Ireland and northern England and Wales too. Some could bring a risk of thunder. Remaining sunny elsewhere. Showers remain possible for Wales on Tuesday afternoon with other areas remaining generally dry and sunny.

“Sunny and dry on Wednesday.”
