Sheffield Wednesday are set to sign goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer, as per Joe Crann.
Sheffield Wednesday are looking to add to what has already been a busy summer window so far. SWFC have made nine signings so far, including ‘keeper Joe Lumley, and now have another shot-stopper on their radar.
Reporter Joe Crann has said that the Owls are set to snap up Ashley Maynard-Brewer on a free transfer following his departure from SPFL side Dundee United. The 27-year-old made just 10 appearances last season at Tannadice Park following a permanent move from Charlton Athletic in January.
Maynard-Brewer will be looking to push Lumley for the number one spot providing positive competition as Wednesday prepare for League One football.
What role will Ashley Maynard-Brewer play at Sheffield Wednesday?
The goalkeeper position was always an area Sheffield Wednesday would need to recruit. This is after the club sold Pierce Charles back to Manchester City for a reported £10m just three weeks ago.
With Joe Lumley already through the door and Maynard-Brewer set to follow, SWFC’s work between the posts may not be complete. The club is also preparing to secure the future of U21s talent Jack Phillips, with Wednesday set to hand him a new contract to keep him at Hillsborough.
As for Maynard-Brewer, he arrives with valuable experience across England and Scotland. A product of Charlton Athletic’s academy, he progressed through the ranks after joining the Addicks as a teenager and went on to play across three seasons in League One.
During his time at The Valley, he also gained senior experience through loan spells with Dover Athletic, Ross County and Gillingham before establishing himself in the South London outfit’s first-team picture.

The goalkeeper also brings valuable international pedigree, having represented Australia at youth level and earned a place in their squad for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
The Verdict: Shrewd business yet again as Sheffield Wednesday sign with restrictions
Sheffield Wednesday have undergone a huge transformation in just a few months following the club’s change of ownership, with David Storch overseeing his first transfer window.
However, while the club has lifted the majority of sanctions following Dejphon Chansiri’s exit, the club still faces a restriction on transfer fees. They have been able to spend up to a certain point, but are now operating close to their limit, hence the free transfer swoop for another goalkeeper.
Maynard-Brewer once again fits the bill many of SWFC’s signings so far, with the return of Barry Bannan and Billy Mitchell two of the standout deals done.
Sheffield Wednesday have already signed nine players this summer, and they are unlikely to stop there. The Owls are rebuilding their squad after operating with limited resources last season, but the arrival of new owners has injected fresh optimism among supporters as they look forward to returning to Hillsborough.
