An American Airlines flight heading for New York had to land at London’s Heathrow airport due to a reported medical emergency on board the aircraft. The AA333 flight was heading from Athens to JFK international when it was diverted.
The Boeing 777 took off at 16:31 local time from the Greek capital, flight tracking data shows. No updates have been issued by Heathrow airport or American Airlines. The Daily Express has approached both for a comment.
Flight tracker website Flight Radar 24 said at around 17:45 the aircraft had been diverted due to an on board medical emergency.
It began its descent to the London airport around three hours into the flight, reports say.
The plane’s journey is expected to continue, with an estimated departure shortly before 20:00, according to Flight Radar 24.
American Airlines runs a daily flight from Athens to JFK international.
Heathrow is the UK and Europe’s busiest airport, with around 1,300 combined take-offs and landings every day.
Earlier this year, the Government backed a third runway at the airport.
