Spider-Man: Brand New Day mild spoilers follow.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth solo Spidey movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity starring Tom Holland, is out in cinemas now. That naturally means that people are asking, ‘what comes next?’ for the film franchise.
If you want the full spoilers about the ending, you can read all about them here, but for now let’s just say that the door is definitely open for more as far as the story goes.

But does Holland actually want to do more Spidey films? Well, he’s been giving some differing answers in the last few months.
In May, the Peter Parker actor said “If I could do what [Robert Downey Jr] did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset”.
While he’d be happy to see a live-action Miles Morales or Spider-Gwen, he did name who he’d like to play a new Peter.
Then, a new interview published within the last week had him saying: “There’s a whole plan that we have been working on for… I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home.
“It’s laid out. It’s gonna change, for sure. But I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting. I know I get really excited when we have these meetings and chat about it. But that is the thing that I want to do most in this character, for sure.”

However, a quote he gave The Hollywood Reporter during the Brand New Day promotional trail saw Holland state: “I will do it for as long as they’ll have me. So if this movie does good, I guess we’ll see!”
It’s obviously early days, but Brand New Day has done incredibly well so far, setting the US record for biggest opening day ever with a $168 million taking (via Deadline).
Unsurprisingly, studio Sony would obviously love to continue the success of Holland’s Spider-Man movies going, with producer Amy Pascal telling SFX Magazine that it’s her “dream” to have this film be the start of a new trilogy, although that’s not a concrete plan.
“The truth is that the rule that we set for ourselves is to take it one movie at a time”, she said. “It’s important to us that you don’t have to see one movie to see the other movie.”
In summary, Sony definitely want to keep on making Spider-Man films as they are huge box office draws, while Holland seems like he’s in two minds: he loves doing them, but is also actively discussing passing on the mantle.
So it looks like one future film will see that handover, unless Holland’s Spidey gets bumped off in the next Avengers duology (or the whole continuity gets reset, as is rumoured in hardcore fan circles), which would necessitate the subsequent solo film introducing a brand-new wall-crawler.
