AIKEN — Visitors to the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum can view a collection of horse racing cartoons by longtime illustrator Chris Ware during a temporary exhibit running Aug. 4 through Aug. 9.

Ware spent nearly 40 years as an illustrator for the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky, where he covered horse racing and equestrian events through cartoons and illustrations.

His work featured events including the Kentucky Derby, the Breeders’ Cup and the World Equestrian Games, using humor to portray horses and the people involved in the sport.

The exhibit highlights Ware’s lighthearted approach to horse racing and equestrian culture through a series of cartoons centered on horses.

“It’s a whimsical look at horses, mostly race horses but horses in general,” said Lisa Hall, Aiken Thoroughbred Hall of Fame museum coordinator.

Hall said Ware’s long career with the Kentucky newspaper gave him the opportunity to document some of the sport’s best-known events through illustrations.

The temporary exhibit offers visitors an opportunity to see a different perspective on horse racing history through editorial cartoons rather than photographs or traditional artwork.

Hall said the exhibit is intended to provide an indoor activity for visitors during the summer while showcasing Ware’s humor and artistic style.

“Come into the hall when it’s so hot outside, you don’t want to do anything else, come in and enjoy the exhibit,” Hall said.

The exhibit is open at the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum through Aug. 9.
