Archaeologists working at Kapellenberg near Hofheim am Taunus, Germany, have uncovered new evidence pointing to the central tomb of a massive burial mound built about 6,000 years ago. The latest excavation season has revealed part of what looks like a stone-lined burial structure, adding fresh support to the idea that the monument once held a large central grave.

The excavation, led by the Leibniz Center for Archaeology (LEIZA) with partners from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, hessenARCHÄOLOGIE, and the city of Hofheim, began on July 27 and runs through August 7. This year’s work has focused on the top of the mound, where researchers believe the monument’s main burial chamber once stood.

The burial mound dates to about 4100 BCE and forms one of the most important parts of the Kapellenberg site. Earlier excavations in 2023 and 2025 opened a trench stretching 34 meters long and five meters wide from the edge of the mound toward its center. Those investigations helped archaeologists rebuild the mound’s original shape and trace how the monument changed over thousands of years.

Attention has now shifted to the summit. Although repeated digging and later activity damaged the center of the mound over time, archaeologists have identified traces of a stone-lined hollow. The layout closely matches Neolithic burial monuments found in what is now northern France.

The team also found signs of a stepped base beneath the mound. Similar foundations appear in early French burial monuments, where stone structures were built in stages before being covered with earth. The shared design fits earlier research suggesting the first people who settled Kapellenberg came from the eastern Paris Basin.

The burial mound was far more than a place for funerals. Researchers believe the hill served as the center of a large and active settlement system during the Neolithic period. Its location connected local communities with long-distance trade routes stretching toward the Atlantic coast and the Mediterranean. Around 6,000 years ago, these growing exchange networks linked communities across much of Europe.

Evidence for those contacts comes from two polished stone axes, one made of jade and the other of amphibolite. Both likely came from the burial mound and are now displayed at the Hofheim City Museum. Their raw materials point to links with Brittany in western France and the western Alps, showing people at Kapellenberg exchanged goods across hundreds of miles.

Kapellenberg ranks among the best preserved Neolithic sites in Germany’s Rhine-Main region. Along with the burial mound, the site contains an impressive defensive earthwork built between 4100 and 3600 BCE. Unlike many prehistoric sites, much of the landscape escaped modern construction, leaving archaeologists with an unusually complete record of early farming communities.

Research at Kapellenberg has continued since 2008, giving scientists a clearer picture of the Michelsberg culture and its role in Neolithic Europe. This year’s fieldwork faced difficult conditions because of intense heat and dry weather, which slowed excavation in some areas. Even so, the new findings have strengthened the case for the long-suspected central tomb. Researchers expect future excavation seasons to answer the remaining questions about the monument’s original design and the people buried within it.
