Sheffield United simply have to replace Gustavo Hamer this summer, and top of their list should be Djurgardens IF star Bo Hegland.
Sheffield United are facing the prospect of losing Gustavo Hamer. It is a reality many at SUFC have faced up to for a while now, with the Dutch star now in the last year of his contract and drawing strong interest from former club Coventry City.
Hamer will go with the best wishes of the Bramall Lane faithful. However, that doesn’t make it any easier to see him go, as he will leave a huge gap behind in their midfield.
The 29-year-old is nigh on irreplaceable at Championship level. But, if the Blades turn their attention to Bo Hegland and move quickly, they could land a new star to fill the Hamer void.

Replacing all those qualities in one player is unlikely. However, SUFC can land a new star for the future who is ready to make up for the output lost by targeting Djurgardens IF’s Norwegian attacking midfielder Bo Hegland.

The potential Hamer replacement has six goals and 13 assists so far this season in just 19 games. That is just one goal contribution less than SUFC ace Hamer managed in 39 outings across all competitions in the 2025/26 campaign.
Hegland is a tall player whose excellent vision makes him a dangerous creator, and his intelligence and frame makes him a danger in the penalty area. His past time as a striker means he has the attacking instincts of a true goalscorer.
Importantly, he pairs these attacking attributes with a good defensive work rate. His engine and willingness to get stuck in will appeal massively to Chris Wilder and the Sheffield United faithful.

The Verdict: Sheffield United can land Bo Hegland, but they must move fast
Hegland’s numbers are excellent, and for now, he is within Sheffield United’s reach. They have financial worries amid continued wrangles between Prince Abdullah and COH Sports, but interest in the likes of Harry Souttar shows there is money to spend.
If Hamer goes, the budget gets another boost, and SUFC would be foolish not to spend a chunk on replacing him with an attacking midfielder who can replace his output and put in the work off the ball.
The issue is, the Blades will have to move fast. The Allsvenskan’s stock as a talent pool is growing, and there will be numerous clubs alerted by Hegland’s excellent campaign.
Hegland is a feasible target for Sheffield United, and an exciting Hamer replacement option. However, the club move fast, or they risk seeing him move and thrive elsewhere.
