Police have detained a man following a major firearms incident in the High Street area of Bangor.

Videos posted to social media show armed response officers approach a male with guns drawn.

The specialist officers can be heard shouting to a male in a shop doorway to drop a “gun”.

Several residents reported hearing shots and loud bangs, however, police have not yet confirmed if any shots were fired.

Around 25 heavily armed officers were at the scene of the incident.

Some members of the public were evacuated from nearby buildings by police officers who had pistols drawn.

UUP Councillor for Ards Peninsula Pete Wray confirmed that the armed male has since been detained.

The man is being attended to by the Ambulance Service.

“Male has been detained and the area is safe,” Mr Wray said. “It’s been a challenging weekend for the PSNI in Ards and North Down, and I thank them for their service as always.”

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: “A man has been detained by police in relation to the earlier incident in the High Street area of Bangor. “Cordons remain in place as officers carry out investigative enquiries. “We appreciate the public’s patience and ask that you still continue to avoid the area at this time.”
