The Race Story
For most of the race the best bet looked in trouble. French Affair was in rear and off the bridle three furlongs out, still with plenty to do when switched right over two out. But the filly’s Goodwood form kicked in up the famous straight: she lengthened powerfully inside the final furlong and got up close home to deny Space Bear by a neck, with Masaban — under treble hero Oisin Orr — a fast-finishing third.
It capped a fine day for the Candlish yard, which had taken the 3:47 sprint with 12/1 shot Rosenpur, and for jockey Sean Dylan Bowen, ice-cool when the race looked gone.

Our Redcar preview nominated French Affair at 13/8 as the pick of the card and specifically flagged the Candlish follow-up angle from Goodwood — a clean hit to finish the meeting, even if the card’s four-fold had long since died with banker Yimmna’s defeat in the opener.
