A tree planted before a major anniversary now stands beside a new tribute, linking generations of remembrance in a British Ukrainian community.
A commemorative event marking the anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster was held at Tarasivka, the Ukrainian Youth Association centre in Derbyshire, United Kingdom.
Representatives of the Ukrainian Youth Association and the Association of Ukrainian Women in Great Britain took part in the commemoration. The Ukrainian Youth Association reported on the event on Facebook.
Prayer and unveiling of a memorial plaque
Participants prayed by the cross and the viburnum tree. The tree was planted ten years ago, ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident, by Maria Finiv, then chair of the Association of Ukrainian Women in Great Britain.
Beside the viburnum tree, Iryna Terletska, chair of the Association of Ukrainian Women in Great Britain, unveiled a memorial plaque in remembrance of the victims of the Chornobyl disaster.
Remembering the victims of the Chornobyl tragedy
The memorial is dedicated to the people who gave their lives protecting Ukraine and Europe from the consequences of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident. It also serves as a reminder of everyone whose lives and destinies were forever changed by the tragedy.
The event at Tarasivka was a mark of respect for the victims of the Chornobyl disaster and highlighted Ukraine’s contribution to mitigating the consequences of one of the world’s largest man-made disasters.
