A refugee was brutally assaulted in a “racist attack” by a pair of masked thugs who left the scene on off-road bikes. Abdo Sheikho, 39, had been enjoying a day out at Strathclyde Country Park near Motherwell on Saturday, August 8, when the men allegedly battered him with stones.
Abdo, originally from Syria, was left with cuts to his face and hands. as a result of the incident. Now living in Glasgow after fleeing his home country, he said he was “absolutely terrified” following the attack.
Speaking to our sister title Glasgow Live, he said: “I tried to flee but they chased me into the wooded area and attacked me — striking my hands, face, and legs with the motorbike.
“They wounded my hands and face and asked when I had arrived in the country; I told them five years ago. They continued their assault, but somehow I managed to escape.

“I called the police, who arrived, helped me, and took me to the train station. They told me I had been subjected to racism and hate; I was absolutely terrified. I am currently in pain in my leg.
“I have cried a great deal; I am in a very bad state of mind and deeply saddened as I have never encountered such people in my life.”
Abdo also said he was struck with large stones which hit his chest and that he has been left severely distraught. He added that “one of them tried to run me over and kill me”.

During the incident, he cried, screamed and begged for mercy, asking his attackers “why are you doing this, brother?”
Abdo has shared photos taken during and after the attack which show the extent of his injuries. The images also show his his alleged attackers, seen wearing balaclavas to hide their identity.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.10pm on Saturday, 8 August, 2026, we received a report of a man being assaulted in Strathclyde Park. Officers attended and the man did not require hospital treatment.
“Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident 2468 of Saturday, 8 August, 2026.”
