How the WTA 1000 quarterfinals in Toronto ended
World No. 4 Coco Gauff advanced to the semifinals after a walkover against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic. The American’s opponent was ranked 14th in the WTA rankings.
Elena Rybakina, the world No. 2, defeated Japan’s Naomi Osaka in a tense match. The Kazakhstani player lost the opening set but managed to turn the match around and won 4:6, 7:6 (7:5), 6:4. Naomi Osaka was ranked 13th in the world before the match.
In the quarterfinals, Elina Svitolina defeated “neutral” player Ekaterina Alexandrova, the world No. 19. The Ukrainian lost the first set before mounting a convincing comeback to win 3:6, 6:0, 6:3.
