Sheffield United are moving closer to the signing of Leicester City defender Harry Souttar, according to journalist John Percy on X.

Sheffield United are working on a deal to re-sign the centre-back as they prepare for the start of the new 2026/27 Championship season under the guidance of head coach Chris Wilder. SUFC kick-start the campaign this weekend with a home clash against Birmingham City.

Souttar, 27, had a loan spell at Bramall Lane back in 2024 and made 22 appearances in all competitions during his time in South Yorkshire, 21 of which came in the league. He remains on the books of Leicester City at the moment but his future with the Foxes is up in the air after their relegation down to League One.

In this latest update regarding his situation at the King Power Stadium in this transfer window, reporter Percy has claimed on X that the Blades are set to make an improved bid of £10million plus add-ons for the Australia international after seeing their first offer of £8million rejected. The player is said to be keen on the move back as well.

Sheffield United beat Mansfield Town 3-0 in the Carabao Cup last time out. Patrick Bamford, Mark McGuinness and Callum O’Hare scored.

Sheffield United defensive department in line for shake-up amid Harry Souttar transfer development

Sheffield United will see Souttar as someone to bolster their defensive department. He will give SUFC more competition and depth at the back.

He is someone who knows the club already and is popular among the fans. Standing at 6ft 6inc, he is also a real threat from set pieces and can chip in with a goal.

If he completes his transfer back to the Blades, he is likely to partner Japhet Tanganga in Wilder’s starting XI. His potential arrival could also pave the way for the likes of Nils Zetterstrom and McGuinness to head out the exit door before the deadline on 1st September.

Sheffield United cut ties with Ben Mee at the end of last term after his contract expired. They also saw Tyler Bindon return to Nottingham Forest following the end of his temporary spell.

The Verdict: Harry Souttar return deal will be ideal for Sheffield United

Sheffield United are short of options at the back so landing Souttar will be a big boost ahead of their clash against Birmingham City. SUFC will be eager to start with a positive result against the Blues.

If he can keep fit, the Aberdeen-born man is a solid operator at second tier level. Prior to his Leicester City move, he spent seven years at Stoke City.
