Sheffield Wednesday are considering offering Reece James a deal with the club as his training stint with Henrik Pedersen’s side continues.
Sheffield Wednesday are looking for more new signings as they prepare a fresh squad for the 2026/27 season. SWFC begin their campaign against Leyton Orient this weekend, but on the transfer front, they remain on the hunt for a new left-back.
Tayo Adaramola looks set to join Cercle Brugge, meaning he will be crossed off the shortlist. However, The Star reports that the Owls are considering offering a contract to Reece James, who has been training with Henrik Pedersen‘s side over the summer.
James is available on a free transfer after his departure from Rotherham United and has played for Wednesday before. Other options are being eyed, including Calum Scanlon, but the 32-year-old is a candidate to join.
Reece James can be a valuable signing for Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday fans are already more than familiar with James. Not only has he been with them for a good chunk of the summer now, but he spent two years on the books from 2022 to 2024.
He joined on loan initially, playing a part in the 2022/23 side that won promotion from the League One play-offs, scoring on that memorable night against Peterborough United. James’ permanent stay was disrupted by injury and competition for minutes, but he left as a player held in high regard by fans.
James’ stay at Rotherham United was steady, operating as a left-back, wing-back or left-sided centre-back. He would bring that same versatility back to SWFC alongside heaps of experience in League One, where he spent much of his career.
He could be the ideal cover and competition for Max Lowe. His experience and versatility means he has a lot to offer beyond being just a backup left-back for Pedersen.

The Verdict: Why Reece James is the perfect left-back addition for Sheffield Wednesday
Whoever joins at left-back is going to be playing second fiddle to Lowe. They will be eager to push for his place, but he is proven at Championship level and is one of the third tier’s strongest in that position.
As such, it would be wise not to waste transfer budget or a loan spot on such a signing. Moving for a free agent like James provides budget cover for Sheffield Wednesday while still landing someone who has proven to be a solid option at the level.
James’ versatility gives him other routes into the team and provides Pedersen with tactical versatility. His professionalism means the boss is unlikely to have issues with his attitude amid potentially limited game time as well.
From a squad building and financial perspective, this move feels ideal for SWFC.
