An event aimed at celebrating the contributions of African people in Greater Manchester is taking place this week. Hosted by the Caribbean and African Health Network (CAHN) Africa Day 2025 will be held at the University of Greater Manchester on Thursday (May 22).
This year’s theme, “Accelerating Business Growth & Technology,” highlights how entrepreneurship and technological advancement are transforming both Africa and the UK. The event also commemorates 80 years since the fifth Pan-African Congress was held in Manchester.
The programme will feature discussions, workshops, and a showcase of African entrepreneurship, designed to build connections and explore how technology can accelerate learning and enterprise.
This year’s guest speakers bring rich experience across business, tech, and innovation such as Cody Gapare, a multi-award-winning inventor and business mentor who co-chairs the Africa Business Chamber (NW), Effa Ettah, a global innovation strategist leading major tech projects at the University of Manchester and Lola Raji, who helps professionals transition into high-paying tech roles through her ventures, Female Bloom and Nabel tech Consulting.
A cultural programme will run alongside the main event, featuring performances, artwork displays, and African-themed food available to purchase.
The free event will run from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Chancellor’s Building in Bolton. Those interested in attending can register here.
Charles Kwaku-Odoi DL, chief executive of CAHN, said: “Africa Day represents not just a celebration, but a powerful reminder of our heritage and collective responsibility to build on the foundation of our forerunners.

“As we gather again in Greater Manchester, we are not simply showcasing our vibrant cultures – we are bridging our ancestral wisdom and tomorrow’s innovations. The African diaspora in our city region must unlock our extraordinary potential and creativity.
“This year’s event creates space to transform cultural pride into economic power and technological advancement. When we harness our shared knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit, we uplift both the continent we hold dear and our diaspora home.”
