Birmingham City defender Phil Neumann is attracting further interest as we head closer the deadline with Borussia Monchengladbach keen, according to Rudy Galetti.
Birmingham City are in the midst of a quieter summer as they focus on evolution not revolution. BCFC finished 10th last season, and are determined to disrupt the Championship promotion picture in 2026/27 campaign.
Phil Neumann will be key to those hopes but a lot of interest is emerging in him services. Borussia Monchengladbach are the latest side to show interest in signing the German defender this summer, according to Rudy Galetti.
With their current centre-back Nico Elvedi set to join Leeds United, they are now in the market for a replacement. The 29-year-old is on their radar as one of their options.
Hull City have also shown interest in Neumann recently but nothing has materialised as of yet. Other sides across Europe remain keen.
European interest in Neumann is no surprise
Neumann proved to be an impressive signing for Birmingham City last season, arriving after standing out in the 2. Bundesliga. He looked ready to step up to a higher level and test himself in a top-flight environment.
Birmingham’s ambitions helped secure the deal, although his first campaign was not entirely smooth. He was generally preferred alongside Klarer despite the presence of Jack Robinson, but the arrival of Dael Fry from Middlesbrough has added further competition.
Fry is unlikely to have joined to sit on the bench, meaning Neumann and the rest of the defence now face increased pressure for places. The 29-year-old will be determined to keep his spot, and that competition could raise standards across the backline.
Fry’s signing may also reflect interest in Neumann, with Birmingham keen to retain the German defender. His strong partnership with Klarer towards the end of last season gave the club little reason to consider moving him on.
Neumann’s performances in that period were particularly encouraging and highlighted his importance to the team. As a result, Birmingham appear well placed to benefit from having multiple strong options in central defence.

Neumann is going to be crucial to Birmingham City this season if they can keep him. However, their will always be worries in the back of Blues fans’ minds when clubs from across Europe are credited with interest.

Ideally, a potential saga like this will be over and done within the opening month of the summer window. That is not the case though, and now Birmingham are going into their Championship opener against Sheffield United with some unwanted speculation.
