Sheffield United are interested in re-signing Anel Ahmedhodzic this summer whilst Southampton are also keen on the defender.
Sheffield United are in the market for a new central defender this transfer window. SUFC have been heavily linked with former loanee Harry Souttar, but they could be turning to another former Blade this summer.
According to Danny Hall at The Star, the Blades are keen on a reunion with Anel Ahmedhodzic. The 27-year-old is open to a return to Bramall Lane and could be available for around £5m.
However, SUFC face competition in bringing the defender back to South Yorkshire, with Southampton also interested. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Saints have made initial contact but states that more clubs are also eyeing the Feyenoord man.
Sheffield United sold Ahmedhodzic last summer after he entered the final year of his contract. With Wrexham now joining the race for Souttar too, Chris Wilder has a good chance of working with the Bosnian once again.
How has Anel Ahmedhodzic fared at Feyenoord?
SUFC made the right choice to cash in on Ahmedhodzic last year, despite their defensive struggles during the 2025/26 season. Recouping £6m was great business, and Japhet Tanganga has done well as his replacement.
The 27-year-old had a main role in Feyenoord’s side last campaign and helped the Dutch outfit finish 2nd in the Eredivisie. It would be surprising to see them let the defender leave this summer considering his strong displays.

Ahmedhodzic was dribbled past only twice last season and had a pass success rate of 91%. Not to mention, he won 65 aerial duels and overall settled well in the Netherlands. It has been a successful stint for the Bosnian. However, with three years still left on his deal, Sheffield United or Southampton’s pursuit may not be as easy as reported.
The Verdict: Sheffield United should pursue Ahmedhodzic over Souttar
Sheffield United have been targeting a move for Souttar all summer. With the Australian’s price tag increasing, their chances of securing him are slimming. Wrexham are now hoping to get a deal done for the defender with a fee likely near £10m.
That price tag is absurd for a player who has hardly played in the last two years. Granted, the Leicester City man was superb at the World Cup, but SUFC could use their money a lot more efficiently.
Focusing on recruiting Ahmedhodzic should be a more appealing choice for Wilder’s team. If he can be signed for £5m, the Blades would gain greater reassurance from the Bosnian, as his injury record is much better than Souttar’s.
Sheffield United have to find a solid defensive partner to Tanganga. Both targets would work well alongside the £7m man. However, SUFC can’t be blowing their budget this summer on the Australian, and that leaves them with an easy decision to make.
