The music of Duke Ellington certainly draws on a number of traditions to create something still fresh.
It is significant that the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) was established more than 40 years ago with the surviving members of Ellington’s orchestra by the now-retiring artistic director of the JLCO, Wynton Marsalis.
The first half consisted of a selection of works from the Duke’s prolific output, while the second was a single piece divided into three coloured sections – Black, Brown, and Beige.

Each of these of was further subdivided into three parts.
All expertly played and accompanied at different times by a splendid set of guest soloists.
