Birmingham City have expressed an interest in Sporting Gijon attacking midfielder Cesar Gelabert.

Birmingham City remain on the hunt for new signings over the final two weeks of the transfer window. BCFC’s opening day draw with Sheffield United showed more signs of improvement, but there was cutting edge lacking in the final third.

The Blues could address that before the window ends though, with Spanish outlet Marca stating the Championship side are interested in attacking midfielder Cesar Gelabert. The 25-year-old currently plays for Sporting Gijon and was among La Liga 2’s standout players in the 2025/26 campaign.

City are not the only ones interested in Gelabert though. MLS sides Columbus Crew and Minnesota United are among the admirers, and there are a number of La Liga clubs considering a move to offer him a step up.

Who is Birmingham City target Cesar Gelabert?

Born in Palencia, Gelabert spent time in the Real Madrid setup as a youngster. He spent two years on the books with CD Mirandes before a free transfer move to French side Toulouse.

After an initial loan, Birmingham City target Gelabert joined Sporting Gijon permanently last summer. The 2025/26 season was by far the best of his career to date, and it has prompted excitement over what could be to come for the Spanish midfielder.

Gelabert mainly played as a no.10 but was used on the wings and in a deeper role at times. His output of eight goals and four assists in 41 games shows how he can contribute from midfield, but the underlying numbers show just how much he has to offer.

The broader metrics of Gelabert’s game make for excellent reading, but last term, he stood out in chance creation, aerial duels, defensive contributions and successful passes.

Cesar Gelabert’s 2025/6 standout stats

Metric Total % rank vs La Liga 2 midfielders Successful passes 1,223 Top 5% Chances created 75 Top 6% Aerial duels won 42 Top 5% Tackles 50 Top 7%

Gelabert has two years left on his contract with Sporting Gijon. He is primed for another influential season in Spain but the chance to impress elsewhere could prove tempting.

The Verdict: Cesar Gelabert could be just what Birmingham City need

Birmingham City have recruited from Spain to great success over the past year with Carlos Vicente and Jhon Solis impressing. Gelabert could be the next hit.

He looks to have the skillset and creative spark to provide some much-needed cutting edge in the final third at BCFC. Importantly though, his success in duels and defensive work rate indicates he will be up for the demanding, physical nature of Championship football.

After such a strong year, it could take a decent fee to prise him away from Sporting Gijon. The club will have to put together an attractive offer to fend off other admirers too.

However, Gelabert could be just what the Blues need in attacking midfield.
