Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank have revealed the name of their third child, born in Lisbon earlier this month, saying it reflects the family’s connections to both Portugal and Britain.
The couple announced on Monday that their daughter, born on August 3, has been named Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank.
“Two weeks ago, we welcomed our baby girl. And since then, we have been living through very special, cosy and love-filled moments,” the couple wrote on Instagram.
They explained that their daughter’s name pays tribute to three people they “love and admire, past and present”, including her great-grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.
“Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home,” they added.
The choice of Adelaide has historical connections with both countries. Queen Adelaide, wife of Britain’s King William IV, was queen consort from 1830 to 1837, while the name also has links to Portuguese royal history.
The newborn joins the couple’s two sons, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, born in February 2021, and Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, born in May 2023.
“Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers,” the couple said.
Adelaide was born at 6.30pm on August 3, weighing three kilograms. Portuguese public broadcaster RTP reported that the birth took place at Hospital da Luz in Lisbon.
At the time, the British Royal Family said King Charles III, Queen Camilla and other members of the family were “delighted with the news”.
Eugenie and Brooksbank have increasingly made Portugal part of their family life. The couple have divided their time between Britain and Portugal in recent years due to Brooksbank’s work in the country.
Princess Eugenie, a granddaughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson, married Brooksbank in 2018.
The new baby is 15th in line to the British throne.
