Sheffield United’s chances of signing Anel Ahmedhodzic are reducing, with Burnley now joining the race for a deal.
Sheffield United are in need of a new centre-back, and amid a troublesome pursuit of Harry Souttar, Anel Ahmedhodzic had been identified as an alternative. The potential move will have prompted both excitement and hope among SUFC fans, but a new update from The Star is a damaging one.
They state that the Blades have not yet formalised their interest with an offer, and the feeling within Bramall Lane is that their chance has been missed. Not only this, but Championship rivals Burnley have entered the race, alongside the already-linked Southampton.
Ahmedhodzic is free to leave Feyenoord for around £4m owing to financial reasons. The 27-year-old is under contract with the Dutch side until 2029, so it is a lowly valuation given that he cost £15.6m in 2025.

Although this update doesn’t completely rule out the chances of Ahmedhodzic returning, it does seem as though he is increasingly likely to slip through Sheffield United’s fingers.
Once again, the Blades hierarchy have not acted quickly or decisively enough. The Bosnia & Herzegovina international would have welcomed the prospect of returning to Bramall Lane but with Burnley and Southampton in the race, the Steel City club could have their work cut out.
Time will tell whether a move is made, but the ongoing SUFC ownership dispute continues to be a spanner in the works. There is a frustrating lack of clarity from the COH Sports chiefs and it has plagued their summer transfer business.

He is a centre-back who has proven to be a big hit in the Championship before and even gave a good account of himself in the Premier League. For a fee that wouldn’t do much damage to the bank balances of Burnley and Southampton, it is nigh on a no-brainer signing.

The price tag could pique interest from elsewhere, perhaps leading to a bidding war. That could see the fee taken higher and further out of SUFC’s reach, but only time will tell just what the coming weeks have in store.
If Ahmedhodzic does return to the Championship though, he would instantly improve the starting XI of any side and re-establish himself as one of the division’s standout players in his position.
