100 Princes Street started as a Georgian townhouse and was once home to Lady Rosemary Clerk in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In the 1860s, French hotelier Calixte Dejay transformed the property into Dejay’s Hotel, one of Edinburgh’s most prestigious hotels, known for its fine dining and spectacular views of Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street Gardens. In 1877, German-born hotelier Albert Thiem acquired the building, renamed it the Windsor Hotel, and expanded it into a seven-storey landmark. Under his leadership, it became renowned as both a luxury hotel and leading dining destination. Later, the building became the Edinburgh headquarters of the Royal Overseas League, serving as a prestigious members’ club that welcomed Commonwealth visitors, dignitaries, and prime ministers for many decades. Following a major restoration by Red Carnation Hotels, the property reopened in April 2024 as 100 Princes Street, a luxury boutique hotel inspired by Scottish explorers and designed to celebrate the building’s rich heritage while offering modern luxury.

What do you consider to be the best room at the property and why?
I would consider The Archibald Signature Suite to be my favorite room in the hotel, although every room is beautiful and has its own unique personality. The Archibald offers breathtaking, floor-to-ceiling views of Edinburgh Castle, providing what I believe is the finest castle view in the city throughout the year. It is particularly spectacular during Hogmanay [New Year’s Eve], when guests can enjoy an unrivaled vantage point over the celebrations and fireworks. In addition to its exceptional setting, the suite features a spacious full bathroom, a separate powder room, and a cozy gas fireplace, creating a luxurious and memorable experience for guests.

How would you describe the guests and vibe at the hotel?
The atmosphere at 100 Princes Street is best described as private, intimate, and club-like. Guests are drawn to the hotel’s sense of exclusivity and understated luxury, enjoying a relaxed environment that feels more like a private members’ club than a traditional hotel. Despite its prime location the hotel offers a tranquil retreat from the bustle of the city, making it an ideal oasis for guests who are looking for personalized service!

What are the best things to do at the hotel?
One of the most memorable experiences at 100 Princes Street for guests is our private whisky tastings in The Ghillies Pantry with our resident whisky ambassador, Dario Orisilli. The tastings allow guests access to our owners’ private whisky collection as well as limited edition bottles, some dating back to the 1940s. I also love an opportunity to sit and relax in The Wallace, our all day dining lounge, and enjoy the very best view of Edinburgh Castle in the city!

What feeling about the hotel and Edinburgh do you hope to impart to guests?
I hope that guests leave 100 Princes Street feeling fulfilled and like they have had a true authentic Scottish experience. The team and I want them to feel like they have been well cared for and that 100 Princes Street is their Edinburgh home away from home.

What local attraction that you always recommend?
We like to offer experiences/attractions that feel authentic, one of these would be [luxury textile designer] Araminta Campbell’s itinerary. Araminta created five bespoke custom tartans for the hotel (many of which can be seen lining bedroom walls). Guests can visit her beautiful atelier just outside the city and shop her private collection as well as create their own registered tartan.

What do you think sets 100 Princes apart from its peers in the area?
We are the only hotel in Edinburgh that operates on a residents only basis, meaning we can offer a level of privacy and exclusivity that guests can’t find anywhere else in the city.
