It’s a balmy Saturday evening in Sefton Park situated a few miles outside the centre of Liverpool and fans are streaming in from all directions to spend the evening in the company of one of Britain’s most loved singer-songwriters, Lewis Capaldi.

Supporting Capaldi in Liverpool is London hip-hop favourite Loyle Carner who delivers a perfectly weighted set of chilled hip-hop songs. Carner provides exactly what this crowd need with a laid back attitude, a smile on his face, and a collection of songs which, may be tinged with emotion and heartfelt samples, but suit this calm evening to a tee.

Trying to recall the last time he was in Liverpool, “Was it in the Marks & Sparks Arena?” he joked. His usual comedic self, the Scot then thanks the audience for coming to see him so long away from the city before promising an evening of really depressing songs in the sunshine as a thank you.

Now, they might be, in his words, depressing songs but, barely two minutes into opener “Hollywood”, thousands of voices are singing back every word. “Grace” and ”Heavenley Kind of State of Mind” quickly follow in similar fashion as, across the field, couples singalong putting an emotional smile on the face of the Scottish favourite. While a couple of well-placed covers mix things up a bit.

“A lot has happened since I was last here,” recalls the Scot. ”I had a mental breakdown but I‘m a lot happier now,” he laughs in reference to his well-publicised breakdown on stage at Glastonbury forcing him to take a break away from the limelight. A huge return to live performance last year saw Capaldi perform to sold-out arenas across the country and, here in Liverpool, as he bows out with hit singles “Survive” and “Someone You Loved”, Capaldi and thousands of fans singing along in Sefton Park all agree that the world is a much better place with him in it.
