Leeds United are closing in on the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, but his agent says otherwise.

United’s goalkeeper position has gone under quite the overhaul this summer. Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow left for free, while Lucas Perri is expected to head to Torino in due course.

Those three outgoings leave Leeds in need of a backup to new No1 James Trafford. That name looks to be in the crosshairs, despite conflicting claims this week.

Leeds United closing in on Michael Zetterer despite agent outburst

The No2 goalkeeper that Leeds have in sights is Eintracht Frankfurt’s Michael Zetterer.

The 31-year-old was reported first in Germany as being United’s main target for the position, but was simultaneously claimed to not be interested in leaving the Bundesliga club.

Now, The Athletic and LeedsLive have both reported that the German ‘keeper is closing in on a move to Elland Road this summer.

However, not so long after this update, the stopper’s agent has since spoken out, claiming this news to be a fabrication.

“We are very surprised by reports that Michael Zetterer is on the verge of a transfer. These reports are simply untrue,” Zetterer’s agent Nico Pellatz told Bild.

However the above LeedsLive report reaffirms, via club sources, that Leeds are still confident of securing a transfer for the experienced ‘keeper.

Leeds United need steady backup cover for James Trafford – Michael Zetterer could be that option

It looks as though Zetterer’s agent isn’t really conveying the truth of this deal, or at least what Leeds assume to be the truth.

That’s not too much of a shock. We know that agents often like to put their interests first – see Zion Suzuki.

The fact Leeds have made it public that we’re confident of securing a deal says a lot. We wouldn’t go public unless it was on the verge of being completed.

And as for the player, he’d come to Leeds with plenty of experience. And, he’s clearly favoured by Farke, so it’s one I’d be happy for us to tick off.
