Birmingham Police Department partners with federal agencies to combat crime, boosted by $440K grant

  • 22 August 2026

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The Birmingham Police Department said its partnership with multiple federal agencies is strengthening, and as a result, lowering violent crimes in the Magic City.

Those partners include the FBI, DEA, ATF, United States Secret Service, United States Postal Inspection Service, U.S. Marshals, and the U.S. Attorney of the Northern District of Alabama.

The collaboration has already yielded substantial results. Since 2024, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has worked alongside Birmingham Police on approximately 165 cases, resulting in more than 130 federal indictments.

Alongside this increased federal support, the Birmingham Police Department announced they have seen a 73% reduction in homicides since 2024—an improvement they credit directly to their deepened partnership with federal and state authorities.

“It’s not just, for example, our partnering local agencies, Jefferson County and the likes,” said BPD Chief Michael Pickett. “We have full support from our federal and state partners, and we truly want the criminals to feel that.”

This collaborative push comes alongside a Department of Justice announcement of $1.3 million in funding allocated to Alabama’s Northern District. Out of that total, more than $440,000 is heading directly to the Birmingham Police Department to help sustain and advance its community safety initiatives.

U.S. Attorney Phil Williams, who serves Alabama’s Northern District, emphasized that while prosecuting criminals is a top priority, securing these critical financial resources is equally vital to keeping the Magic City safe.

“The united front is real,” Williams said. “It’s not just about, ‘Hey, we’ll take that case and prosecute it.’ It’s: what else can we do for you? How else can we help? When can we get together? Let’s collaborate, let’s plan, let’s strategize.”

BPD has been contacted for additional details on how they plan to utilize the remaining portion of the grant money.
