It doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom for the Blades though. They have an experienced manager in Chris Wilder and still have some solid Championship players at their disposal in the likes of Patrick Bamford, Callum O’Hare and Japhet Tanganga, among others.
They also have a nice blend of youth in players such as Oli Arblaster and Sydie Peck, as well as experienced heads like Bamford, Joe Rothwell and Matt Doherty. If they can add in some useful free transfers and loans, there is no reason why they can’t still have a successful campaign.
Sheffield United drew 0-0 at home against Birmingham City on the opening day and although they weren’t able to find a winner against the Blues, they were solid defensively and can be satisfied with a point to start with. They are back in action this weekend with a tricky away trip down to South Wales to take on Swansea City.

Hull City stayed up on goal difference on the final day of the 2024/25 season under ex-Blades boss Ruben Selles before turning to Sergej Jakirovic just over 12 months ago. Many thought they would go down with Sheffield Wednesday before a ball was kicked.
Their squad was stacked with the experience of McBurnie, Egan, Matt Crooks, Lewie Coyle and Paddy McNair who all knew the league inside out. Sheffield United should now follow a similar blueprint and make signings who are tried and tested in the Football League. The Tigers have proved that you don’t need to spend silly money to get out of the division.

There are plenty of available free agent players who Sheffield United could target now. SUFC should keep an eye on Will Smallbone, Axel Tuanzebe, Joe Aribo, Beni Baningime, Solly March, Alex Gilbert and Ryan Fraser.
The Blades can also tap into the loan market well. As Premier League clubs sign better talent closer to the deadline, more individuals will become available.
