This European premiere is a short (one hour) intense examination of racialised violence in America.
Its approach is startlingly original.
Although the scene is one of three men hanging from a tree (having been lynched) the scenery is all imagined, a deliberate choice of the author / director, Zora Howard. The contrast between the mundane conversations and the reality of the appalling situation in which these unfortunates find themselves is so stark as to induce a visceral reaction.
Despite not being an African-American, one still obtains some insight into the horror, fear, and sheer terror to which an entire set of people have been subjected.
The movement is minimal – consider the situation! – demonstrating the magnificent performances by the actors, Kamal Bolden as Slim, Julian Rozzell as Bird, and Bryce Foley as Blood.
A tour de force.
