Tokyo and the eastern Kanto region were shaken at around 2 am Sunday by a magnitude 5.9 earthquake centered in southern Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of 70 kilometers, with shaking registering lower 5 on Japan’s seven-point seismic scale. There was no threat of a tsunami. Lower 5 intensity shaking was recorded in parts of Tokyo, Ibaraki, Saitama and Chiba prefectures, according to Japanese authorities.
